At one o'clock, after our talk, I told you what to do
Don't stand and gawk, just take a walk and be out of here by two
So she packed her things, gave me my ring and didn't look back at me
Now I regret what I had said and it's barely after three
I paced the floor well until four, all I could do is mope
When five rolled along, I knew I was wrong but now I must learn how to cope

Now it's too late, I've sealed my fate, I got a temper like gunpowder
And I admit, I've been committed to a life sentence without her
I know I've been the usual fool, I can't do that much hard time
Why must they be so unusually cruel, let the punishment fit the crime
Why don't they just electrocute me or hang me from a rope

I'm bound to spend my life alone as one
I'll sit around playing solitaire or single gin-hand rummy

The years seem to go so very slow in my quest to find her

I don't do my chores, everything just stops, I gaze up at the stars
I searched the grocery stores, the coffee shops, the libraries and the bars
If I could take away all the things I say or wash my mouth out with soap
